School-Based Prevention Services
Beyond Housing coordinates the Normandy Schools Collaborative’s Wrap-Around support partners and provides in-school case management and child advocacy for students and their families in the district. Case managers are trusted adults that support students and their families by connecting them with resources, services, and information that improve their well-being. Wrap-Around Coordination works to build partnerships between service providers and the school district to ensure a support network focused on serving Normandy students and their families. It is a student- and family-centered, community-based, and culturally-relevant approach to meeting the social-emotional, health, safety, and basic needs of students and families at the district level.
Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School
Beyond Housing’s Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School offers culturally appropriate group mentoring focused on daily encouragement and behavior modeling, setting and achieving personal goals, and supporting social-emotional development and resilience. Children participate in 1.5 hours of near-peer group mentoring daily over six weeks. Mentoring takes place within the context of summer enrichment programs at four sites, targeted at children entering grades K through 5, who reside in the 24:1 Community. To participate in mentoring, and get the most out of it, children must make an attendance commitment to the free summer enrichment program. In addition to mentoring, the Freedom School’s research-based, multicultural curriculum supports children and their families with high quality academic and character-building enrichment, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational servant leadership, and nutrition, health, and mental health.
