In our last few blog posts, we’ve talked about various components of behavioral health care, including what makes a child healthy, what happens when kids don’t have all their basic needs met, and what happens when the behavioral health system becomes overwhelmed with patients.
Now, it’s time to talk about the path forward. What does it take to strengthen the behavioral health system in the St. Louis region? To work toward supporting a community where fewer people live with or are at risk of severe mental and behavioral health concerns?
At the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund, we believe it starts with prevention.
Meeting Basic Needs
We know that children thrive when their basic needs are met—when they have things like healthy food, a safe and loving home, and a stable environment to play, learn, and grow in. These aren’t extras; they are essential foundations for both physical and mental wellness.
But when those needs go unmet, the risk of developing mental and behavioral health concerns increases. And when many children in a community experience those challenges at once, it can put enormous pressure on the entire system of care—leading to longer wait times, more severe cases, and worse outcomes.
Investing in Prevention
At the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund, we believe that investing in prevention is a key component of reversing this trend.
By funding early supports, community programs, and interventions that address our community’s mental health needs before it reaches a crisis point, we can reduce the number of children who develop serious conditions. We believe this will help unburden the system of care and ensure that critical resources remain available for those who need them most.
These changes won’t happen overnight—but a collective focus on preventive care is a powerful first step. By working together as a community to prioritize children’s wellness, we can build a healthier, more resilient future where all kids have the opportunity to thrive.
