When we think about what makes a child well, we might picture happy moments—laughing with friends at the park, enjoying a favorite treat after dinner, or playing outside on a sunny afternoon. While these experiences are meaningful, a child’s well-being goes much deeper.

Key Factors Affecting A Child’s Wellness

True wellness for a child begins with having their basic needs met. This means:

  • having consistent access to healthy food
  • living in a safe and stable home
  • being surrounded by loving, supportive relationships

It also means growing up in a neighborhood where it’s safe to play outside, walk to school, and breathe clean air—without the threat of violence or pollution.

These building blocks—safe environments, stable families, access to basic needs, and supportive communities—are essential to a child’s physical and behavioral health. When even one of these elements is missing, it can create stress and instability that impact a child’s development and  their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Investing to Protect and Support the Wellbeing of Kids and Families

At the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund (CSF), we’re committed to helping children and families in St. Louis County thrive. Guided by our impact framework, we’re investing in services and supports that meet their most critical needs. Whether it’s mental health care, family support, or community-based resources, we’re working to build a behavioral health system that gives every child the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe, and hopeful. Because when children’s needs are met, they’re better able to learn, grow, and succeed—now and for years to come.
